What is Wild Zebra?
Wild Zebra is a Seattle edtech startup offering an AI learning platform for math and reading for students in grades 2 through 9. Rather than handing over answers, it takes a Socratic approach, working students toward solutions with questions that draw out their reasoning step by step.
Lessons are customized around topics the student already cares about, such as sports, cooking or music. Wild Zebra builds a learning tree for each student that tracks what they have mastered, where the gaps are and what comes next, and uses it to choose the next activity. The platform also analyzes tutoring conversations, flagging distraction or answer-seeking elsewhere as well as positive moments like persistence and curiosity in dashboards for teachers and parents.
Wild Zebra says it reaches tens of thousands of students and has logged hundreds of thousands of tutoring conversations. It opened to families this year at $48 per month per child. On the school side, it works through E3n, and a 722-student pilot evaluation found gains of four to eight percentage points among fifth and sixth graders.
The company was co-founded in 2024 by CEO Edan Shahar, who ran Test Innovators for nearly a decade, and AI technologist Erik Selberg.
